Solid Waste

The Siksika Nation Public Works Solid Waste team is made up of certified heavy equipment operators, including Class 1, and 3 drivers.

The team is dedicated to providing solid waste collection and management of domestic waste via three collection systems: community blue bins, large items, and black totes. The team is equipped with Large Garbage Trucks, Skid Steers, Back Hoes, Flat Decks, and Trailer Units to assist in all operations associated with the removal of domestic garbage and large items on the Nation.

Siksika Nation solid waste systems are based on the current Transfer Station capabilities, which is used to temporarily store debris until they are hauled to landfill for final disposal. Siksika Transfer Station is being evaluated for upgrades and this project is currently in the design phase.

Public Works has recently obtained Alberta Recycling Management Authority certification and it is in the process of developing recycling protocols for mattresses, electronics, metal, construction materials, oil, and others.

Please note that Siksika Public Works Solid Waste team and its Transfer Station are only equipped to manage domestic waste. Industrial and commercial solid waste generators must contact the Public Works to arrange for appropriate solid waste management at an applicable cost.

What we do to help Nation members

Solid Waste Collection

In order to provide Nation members with the best service possible, even in situation where Public Works Solid Waste is compromised, Nation member are required to contain all solid waste in garbage bags.

If domestic waste is not properly bagged in situations where equipment is compromised and not available, staff will not be able to collect garbage by hand due to the extreme risks associated with these practices.

Please make sure all needles are properly capped for safe disposal.
